Matt, I'm writing a non-fiction book about shipping, and sailed through the Gulf of Aden to Singapore last year on a Maersk vessel. I loved your pirate piece in the FT. But I'm puzzled: since when does AIS reveal an entire cargo manifesto, or at least enough to isolate a particular box of eg. iPhones? as far as I understand it, only the shipping company has the entire manifesto. beyond noting that it is an oil tanker or car carrier or container vessel, I don't see how they can be more precise. But would be delighted to be corrected. Otherwise it is refreshing to see someone finally say so clearly that this is a largely bloodless business which as you say thrives on corporate fear of conflict.
